Porto Cervo Marina, an asset belonging to the Smeralda Holding Group – the Italian company owned by the Qatar Investment Authority sovereign fund and owner since 2012 of real estate and land on the seafront along the Costa Smeralda -, and managed by IGY Marinas, a world leader in the management of luxury marinas, is continuing in its commitment to protect the environment, in line with the sustainability strategy carried forward by the Group. Again, this year awarded the Blue Flag for marinas, Porto Cervo Marina has now welcomed the Seabin, floating baskets designed to reduce the quantity of waste in the sea.
The three devices – personalised with the Porto Cervo Marina logo and positioned on the port quays – have been designed to collect plastic waste, above all microplastics, and fuel from the sea surface, and can collect more than 500 kilos of waste per year.
The mechanism behind the Seabin is remarkably simple. It consists of a container immersed in the sea and fitted with a pump to create flow and capture waste. A staff member from the Marina will be responsible for supervising and emptying the devices and disposing of the waste properly. The entire operation will be repeated at least once a day, according to the cleanliness of the port waters.
This initiative by Porto Cervo Martina is perfectly in line with the sustainable approach adopted by the Group. The protection of the landscape and the environment has always represented an aspect of prime importance for Smeralda Holding, which works alongside institutions, the community and tourism operators, not only to guarantee the sustainable tourist development of the area but above all for the benefit of the planet and of future generations.
